Often romanticised in Western films and folklore, cowboys are seen as rebellious heroes—figures who lived by their own code and carved their path through the rugged frontier landscape of early 20th-century America. What’s often overlooked, however, is the significant presence of Black cowboys (estimated 25% of total), whose stories were rarely celebrated in the same way. It is an reinterpretation of classic mission furniture. At 44”, it’s long extended back gives a towering presence akin to a throne. 

I took curly hair as an inspiration for the wavy back, looking to the symbolism in the natural hair movement. I wanted to use a precision tool, the laser cutter, to make something that treats the sinuous lines not as imperfections but as a conscious repeatable choice. The lines were hand drawn and were copied over to a vector software and turned into cut paths for the laser.

 I find dancing to be one of the greatest expressions of freedom one can feel, and was drawn to the all the amazing photos from the Harlem Renaissance. In the face of systematic oppression, African Americans were dancing and were out shouting and making their own forms of art, which has had an influence on culture like never before seen. These were some of the roots, and those trees stand before us today in all walks of society. I used hand painted metal inlays in the walnut to try to showcase and capture some of this energy. The completed painting is then inlaid into salvaged oak that has been stained, routed and assembled into a small wall-mounted cabinet. A routed mirror is housed within the rear panel, allowing the object to function both as a display case for the artwork and as a practical mirror. Jewellery box-inspired hardware reinforces its domestic character, blurring the boundary between painting, furniture and everyday use. Rather than directly referencing their appearance, the cabinet translates their spirit through construction. A monolithic aluminium shell forms the exterior. Shapes are cut from this outer skin and are not discarded; instead, they become structural metal inlays that join reclaimed timber components within the inner cabinet. Material removed from one part of the object is repurposed to construct another, creating a direct physical relationship between exterior and interior through a single act of fabrication. The reclaimed hardwood retains traces of its previous life—old mortises, nail holes, paint remnants, and repairs—while the aluminium inlays act as both decoration and joinery, celebrating repair as construction rather than concealment. The result is an object that explores transformation, labour, and resourcefulness, where waste becomes structure and making itself becomes the narrative.
