Cottage Window II

Cottage Windows were inspired by the idea of looking into a world beyond view, seeing only part of the story, a whole world hidden behind a shining curtain window. In my research I learned that during the harlem renaissance, there were a few different cabin retreats scattered around the US that were made specifically for african americans to vacation, a place where they could escape. Growing up in and around the great lakes of Minnesota I took access to nature for granted and, I didn’t think about how this connection to nature as form of leisure and escapism could be only for a priviledged few.

In the day light Cottage Window II is unassuming, a blank canvas, but when the light is turned on it shows the window frame underneath with a figure behind, a whole story happening behind curtains.
