Dogtrot - Black Cowboy I (Table/Stool)
The dogtrot table was inspired by dogtrot houses, which are popular cottage styles in the South of the US, where you have two rooms that are split by an adjoining outdoor staircase in the middle.
Black Cowboy” is a hand-painted work featuring laser-cut aluminium inlays that honour the legacy of African American cowboys. Often romanticised in Western films and folklore, cowboys are seen as rebellious heroes—figures who lived by their own code and carved their path through the rugged landscape of early 20th-century America. What’s often overlooked, however, is the significant presence of Black cowboys, whose stories were rarely celebrated in the same way. With cowboy and ranch imagery deeply woven into cabin aesthetics, this piece is my way of reimagining that iconic figure—bringing forward a narrative that’s been overshadowed.
The painting style and colour choice was influenced by the harlem renaissance painter Jacob Lawrence and his series, The Great Migration.
